Concentration inequalities for Markov processes via coupling

چکیده
We obtain moment and Gaussian bounds for general Lipschitz functions evaluated along the sample path of a Markov chain. We treat Markov chains on general (possibly unbounded) state spaces via a coupling method. If the first moment of the coupling time exists, then we obtain a variance inequality. If a moment of order 1+ ǫ of the coupling time exists, then depending on the behavior of the stationary distribution, we obtain higher moment bounds. This immediately implies polynomial concentration inequalities. In the case that a moment of order 1+ǫ is finite uniformly in the starting point of the coupling, we obtain a Gaussian bound. We illustrate the general results with house of cards processes, in which both uniform and non-uniform behavior of moments of the coupling time can occur.

Transportation-information Inequalities for Markov Processes (ii) : Relations with Other Functional Inequalities
We continue our investigation on the transportation-information inequalities WpI for a symmetric markov process, introduced and studied in [14]. We prove that WpI implies the usual transportation inequalities WpH, then the corresponding concentration inequalities for the invariant measure μ. We give also a direct proof that the spectral gap in the space of Lipschitz functions for a diffusion pr...
متن کاملConcentration inequalities for random fields via coupling
We present a new and simple approach to concentration inequalities for functions around their expectation with respect to non-product measures, i.e., for dependent random variables. Our method is based on coupling ideas and does not use information inequalities. When one has a uniform control on the coupling, this leads to exponential concentration inequalities. When such a uniform control is n...
متن کاملObtaining measure concentration from Markov contraction
Concentration bounds for non-product, non-Haar measures are fairly recent: the first such result was obtained for contracting Markov chains by Marton in 1996. Since then, several other such results have been proved; with few exceptions, these rely on coupling techniques. Though coupling is of unquestionable utility as a theoretical tool, it appears to have some limitations. Coupling has yet to ...
متن کاملConcentration of Measure on Product Spaces with Applications to Markov Processes
Abstract. For a stochastic process with state space some Polish space, this paper gives sufficient conditions on the initial and conditional distributions for the joint law to satisfy Gaussian concentration inequalities and transportation inequalities. In the case of the Euclidean space Rm, there are sufficient conditions for the joint law to satisfy a logarithmic Sobolev inequality. In several...
متن کاملBernstein type’s concentration inequalities for symmetric Markov processes
Using the method of transportation-information inequality introduced in [28], we establish Bernstein type’s concentration inequalities for empirical means 1 t ∫ t 0 g(Xs)ds where g is a unbounded observable of the symmetric Markov process (Xt). Three approaches are proposed : functional inequalities approach ; Lyapunov function method ; and an approach through the Lipschitzian norm of the solut...
